The smell is nearly always in the lid, not the bottle. Take the gasket out, clean it separately, and most odour problems disappear.
The daily clean
Warm water, a drop of washing up liquid and a bottle brush that actually reaches the base. Rinse thoroughly and leave the bottle upside down with the lid off. Storing a bottle sealed while damp is the single most reliable way to create a smell.
The deep clean, once a week
- Fill with warm water, add a tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda and a splash of white vinegar. It will foam.
- Leave it fifteen minutes, then scrub with a bottle brush.
- Remove the lid gasket. Most silicone seals pull out with a fingernail. Wash it separately.
- Use a small brush or a cotton bud on the lid threads, where residue collects invisibly.
- Rinse everything thoroughly and air dry fully before reassembling.
The gasket step is the one that matters. A bottle that still smells after a thorough wash almost always has a seal that has never been removed.

What damages the bottle
- Bleach. Chlorine pits stainless steel and the damage does not reverse.
- Dishwasher heat on insulated bottles. Can compromise the vacuum layer between the walls, after which the bottle no longer holds temperature. This failure is permanent.
- Steel wool. Scratches the interior and creates texture for bacteria to hold onto.
- Leaving liquid in overnight. Particularly anything with sugar or milk, which is how biofilm establishes in the first place.
How to stop it coming back
Dry it properly. Bacteria need moisture, and a bottle stored capped with a few drops inside is a sealed damp chamber. Store it with the lid off or loosely rested on top, and the weekly deep clean becomes a formality rather than a rescue operation.
