Degrease, scrub, rinse, dry completely, then relube one link at a time and wipe off the excess. The wiping step is the one people skip and it matters more than the lubricant brand.
The routine clean
- Put the bike in a stand or lean it so the pedals turn freely.
- Apply degreaser to the chain while backpedalling slowly, covering the full length.
- Leave it a couple of minutes to penetrate.
- Scrub with a stiff brush, working the top, bottom and both side plates. A chain cleaning tool that clamps around the chain does this more thoroughly and faster.
- Rinse with a low flow of water. High pressure forces water and grit past the seals into the rollers.
- Dry fully. Backpedal with a rag, then leave it fifteen minutes. Lubricant will not adhere to a wet chain.
- Apply one drop of lubricant per roller while backpedalling.
- Let it sit five minutes, then wipe the outside firmly with a clean rag.
Why the final wipe matters
Lubricant is only doing work inside the rollers. Anything left on the outer plates does nothing except attract dust and grit, which then forms an abrasive paste and wears the drivetrain faster than running slightly dry. A properly lubricated chain looks almost clean, not wet.

What to avoid
- Standard WD-40 as a lubricant. It displaces water and strips lube. There is a separate bike-specific product line, which is not the same thing as the blue and yellow can.
- Pressure washers. They drive water into the bottom bracket and hub bearings.
- Household degreasers on carbon or painted frames. Some are aggressive enough to damage finishes.
- Lubricating a dirty chain. This traps grit inside the rollers, which is worse than doing nothing at all.
When cleaning is no longer the answer
Chains stretch as the rollers and pins wear. Past roughly 0.5 percent elongation on a modern drivetrain, the chain no longer meshes correctly and begins wearing the cassette and chainrings to match. A chain checker tool is inexpensive and takes seconds to use. Replacing a worn chain promptly is far cheaper than replacing the cassette that a neglected chain destroys.
