Unplug it, let it cool to warm, then lay damp paper towels on the plates and close the lid for five minutes. The trapped steam does the work that scrubbing cannot.
The steam method, step by step
- Unplug the machine and let it cool until it is warm rather than hot. Cold plates do not generate steam and hot ones are a burn risk.
- Wet several sheets of paper towel and wring them out so they are damp, not dripping.
- Lay them across the lower plate and close the lid.
- Leave five minutes. Residual heat turns the moisture to steam and softens the baked-on batter.
- Open, discard the towels and wipe the plates with a soft cloth. Most residue lifts without pressure.
Getting into the grooves
After steaming, the deep corners of the grid usually still hold a little residue. A silicone spatula corner, a wooden skewer or a soft toothbrush will clear it. What matters is the material, not the technique. Nonstick coatings scratch easily and once scratched they release batter worse, which creates more residue next time and starts a cycle.
What not to do
- Do not submerge it. Water inside the housing reaches the element and the thermostat.
- Do not use metal. Forks and knives strip nonstick in a single pass.
- Do not use abrasive cream cleaners. They dull and remove the coating.
- Do not use oven cleaner. Caustic and entirely wrong for a nonstick surface.
- Do not clean it hot. Steam burns and the residue bakes harder as the water evaporates instantly.
Dealing with oil buildup
Over time a sticky brown film develops on the plates and around the hinge. That is polymerised oil rather than batter, and steam alone will not shift it. A cloth dampened with a little white vinegar cuts it, worked gently and followed by a plain damp wipe. This is worth doing every few months rather than every use, because the film accumulates gradually and is much harder to remove once it has thickened.
Preventing the mess in the first place
Most heavy cleaning is caused by overfilling. Batter that overflows the edge bakes onto the hinge and the outer casing where it is hardest to reach. Use slightly less batter than feels right, brush the plates with a thin film of oil rather than spraying aerosol, which leaves a gummy residue, and wipe the plates while the machine is still warm after each use. Two minutes then saves the full procedure later.
