A genuine settlement notice always names a case number, a court, and a dedicated claims domain. If the message you received is missing any of the three, treat it as fraudulent and stop.
Why so many fake Google notices circulate
Two things make these an attractive target for fraud. The user base is enormous, so a generic email will reach real account holders by chance alone. And genuine settlements involving large technology companies do happen often enough that the premise is believable. That combination is exactly what phishing operations look for.
Where the real documents live
Court-approved settlements publish an operative notice, a claim form, and the settlement agreement itself. Those documents are posted on the administrator’s dedicated site and are also filed on the court docket. Federal dockets are searchable through PACER. If a claim exists, both sources will agree on the case number, the class definition and the deadline.
The four checks that separate a real notice from a fake
- Find the case number and the court. Every court-approved settlement notice carries both. A notice with neither is not a notice.
- Read the class definition, not the headline. The definition states exactly which customers, purchases or dates are covered. It is the only thing that decides whether you qualify.
- Match the domain. Administrators run one dedicated domain per settlement. Compare the URL printed on the notice against any link you were emailed. Fakes copy the branding but never the domain.
- Confirm the deadline at the source. Deadlines come from the court order. A deadline that appears only in an email and nowhere on the official site is a pressure tactic.

If you already handed over information
If you entered card details, ask your issuer to reissue the card rather than only disputing a charge. If you entered a Social Security number, place a free fraud alert with any one of the three credit bureaus, which obliges the other two to match it. Report the notice itself to the FTC so the domain gets flagged for everyone else.
Reading the class definition properly
The definition is a single paragraph and it does all the work. It will typically state a product or feature, a jurisdiction, and a date range. You qualify only if all three apply to you. People routinely file on the strength of the headline and are then rejected because their account activity fell outside the window by a few months.
