Work out whether yours need it
Two specifications decide this, and both are printed on any reputable manufacturer’s page.

Impedance is the figure most people quote, but sensitivity is often the more useful of the two. A low impedance headphone with poor sensitivity can be harder to drive properly than a higher impedance model with good sensitivity, which is why judging on ohms alone leads people to buy amps they do not need.
The symptom that actually indicates a problem
Running out of volume is the obvious one, but the more telling symptom is thin, weak bass at higher volume. When a source cannot supply enough current, the low frequencies suffer first because they demand the most. If your headphones sound full at low volume and hollow at high volume, that is an amplification limit rather than a headphone limit.
What to prioritise when buying
- Output power at your impedance. Manufacturers quote power into a specific load. A figure into 32 ohms tells you almost nothing about performance into 300 ohms, so match the quoted load to your headphones.
- Output impedance. Lower is better, and the general guidance is that it should be under one eighth of your headphone impedance to avoid altering frequency response.
- Noise floor. Matters most with sensitive in-ear monitors, which will reveal hiss that over-ear headphones hide entirely.
- Gain switching. A low gain setting is what makes one amp usable with both sensitive in-ears and demanding over-ears.
Where the money stops mattering
Beyond the point where an amp delivers clean power with a low output impedance and an inaudible noise floor, further spending buys build quality, connectivity and features rather than audible improvement. That threshold arrives far earlier than enthusiast discussion suggests. The most common way to waste money here is buying a powerful desktop amp for efficient headphones that a phone already drives to full volume.
