Dark, cool and stable beats any display rack. Light and heat degrade polish faster than time does, so the prettiest storage is usually the worst storage.
What actually ruins polish
- Light. UV breaks down pigment and yellows clear formulas. A rack on a sunlit windowsill will visibly shift colours within months.
- Heat. Warmth thickens polish by driving off solvent every time the bottle is opened. Bathrooms are the worst room in the house for this.
- Temperature swings. Repeated expansion and contraction loosens the cap seal, which accelerates everything else.
- A dirty neck. Polish dried around the bottle neck stops the cap sealing. Wiping the neck before capping does more for longevity than any storage choice.

The jump most people get wrong is from drawer to wall rack. Wall racks solve visibility and are genuinely satisfying, but mounting one on an open wall trades bottle lifespan for display. Mounting the same rack inside a cupboard door keeps both.
Sorting that survives contact with reality
Colour family is the only sorting system most people maintain. Sorting by brand looks tidy and collapses within a month, because nobody reaches for a polish by brand. Sorting by finish, meaning creme, shimmer, glitter, works well as a second level inside each colour family, since finish changes how a shade behaves more than the shade itself does.
Reviving a thickened bottle
Add a few drops of proper polish thinner, cap it and roll the bottle between your palms rather than shaking. Never use acetone or nail polish remover for this. Remover dissolves the polish film rather than restoring the solvent balance, and a bottle treated with it will never cure properly again. If thinner does not fix it, the bottle is finished.
