The easiest designs use no tools at all, and the ones that last longest keep the detail away from the nail tip. Both facts should drive your choice more than how the design looks in a photo.
By difficulty
| Level | Design | What it needs |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner | Alternating black and orange nails | Two polishes, nothing else |
| Beginner | Colour blocked half moon | Two polishes, optional tape |
| Beginner | Blood drip tips | Red polish, dotting tool or toothpick |
| Intermediate | Spider web accent nail | Fine liner brush, steady hand |
| Intermediate | Ghost faces on a pastel base | Dotting tool, white and black |
| Advanced | Full scene nails | Multiple brushes, patience, time |
Matching the design to nail length
Short nails have limited surface, so designs with one clear motif per nail read better than busy patterns that get cropped. Drips, dots and single small shapes work. Long nails, particularly almond and coffin shapes, have room for scene work and gradients, and they are the only shapes where detailed webs read clearly rather than turning into a smudge.
Square short nails suit colour blocking best because the straight free edge gives a clean line to work against.
Making it survive the week
- Keep detail off the tip. The free edge takes the most contact and wears first. Art placed nearer the cuticle survives days longer.
- Cap the edge. Run the topcoat brush along the free edge itself, not just across the surface. This one step is the largest single factor in chip resistance.
- Thin coats. Two thin coats cure harder than one thick one and are far less likely to dent.
- Let art dry before topcoat. Fine line work smears if the topcoat goes on too soon, which is the most common way a good design gets ruined at the last step.
Colours that read as Halloween without being obvious
Black and orange is the default, but it is not the only route. Deep plum, oxblood and a muted sage all read seasonal while remaining wearable into November. A matte topcoat over any dark shade shifts the whole look toward the season without any art at all, which is the lowest effort option on this page and often the most flattering.
