Where in the speed range the shake shows up narrows the cause faster than anything else. A vibration that arrives at highway speed is usually wheel balance. One felt only under braking is the brakes. Shaking at idle that smooths out as you move is the engine or its mounts. Start there.
Sort the shake by speed before you guess at parts
Vibration is a frequency problem, and the thing generating it spins at a rate tied to something specific. Wheels turn in proportion to road speed, so anything wheel related changes character as you speed up and slow down. The engine turns at its own rate regardless of how fast you are moving, so engine related shaking is loudest at idle and in neutral. Brake related vibration only exists while the pads are clamped. Those three groups barely overlap, which is why a careful description of when it happens is worth more than any amount of poking around in a driveway.
Pay attention to where you feel it as well. Vibration coming up through the steering wheel generally originates at the front of the car. Vibration felt in the seat and floor generally comes from the rear.

The short list, most common first
- Wheels out of balance. By a wide margin the most frequent answer, and the cheapest to correct.
- Tire damage. A separated belt, a bulge in the sidewall, or uneven wear from a bad alignment.
- Warped or unevenly coated brake rotors. Felt only under braking.
- Engine misfire. Often paired with a check engine light and a rough idle.
- Worn motor mounts. Lets normal engine vibration reach the cabin unfiltered.
- Suspension or steering wear. Tie rod ends, ball joints, bushings.
- Bent wheel or a driveshaft problem. Less common, usually traceable to a pothole or an impact.
What not to keep driving on
Some shaking is an annoyance and some is a warning that a connection is coming apart. Stop and get the car towed if the vibration started suddenly after hitting something, if it is accompanied by clunking, grinding, or a burning smell, if the steering feels loose or wanders, if the shake gets dramatically worse over a few miles, or if you can see a bulge or a bald patch on a tire. A wheel that is loose or a suspension joint that is failing does not give much warning before it lets go, and the failure happens at the worst possible moment.
What to tell the shop so they find it quickly
Describe the speed range, whether it changes with braking or acceleration, whether you feel it in the wheel or the seat, and what happened just before it started. A pothole, a curb strike, a recent tire change, or new brakes all point a technician straight at a likely area. Vibration diagnosis is largely a process of elimination, and the description you bring in removes several steps from it before the car is even on the lift.
