Kia and Hyundai Settlement: Covered Models and Claim Steps

September 9, 2026

Vehicle settlements are defined by make, model and model year, and your VIN is what decides it. Check the VIN against the official list before doing anything else.

How vehicle classes get drawn

Automotive settlements almost always turn on a component rather than a brand. The class is written around the vehicles that shipped with the part or configuration at issue, which is why one model year is included and the next is not, and why two cars that look identical can fall on opposite sides of the line.

That makes the VIN lookup the only reliable check. Owner forums and news coverage routinely describe the class more loosely than the court document does.

The two claim types to expect

Claim type What it covers Typical proof
Remedy or upgrade A fix applied at no cost to the owner Ownership and VIN
Reimbursement Money already spent because of the defect Repair invoices, insurance records, police report where relevant

Reimbursement is where documentation matters. Invoices that name the specific repair carry weight. A card statement showing a payment to a garage usually does not, because it does not show what was done.

The four checks that separate a real notice from a fake

  1. Find the case number and the court. Every court-approved settlement notice carries both. A notice with neither is not a notice.
  2. Read the class definition, not the headline. The definition states exactly which customers, purchases or dates are covered. It is the only thing that decides whether you qualify.
  3. Match the domain. Administrators run one dedicated domain per settlement. Compare the URL printed on the notice against any link you were emailed. Fakes copy the branding but never the domain.
  4. Confirm the deadline at the source. Deadlines come from the court order. A deadline that appears only in an email and nowhere on the official site is a pressure tactic.

Legitimate versus fraudulent, side by side

Legitimate settlement Red flag
Filing is always free Any fee, deposit or card details required
Asks for a claim ID from your notice Asks for full Social Security number or bank login
Dedicated settlement domain Generic domain or a link shortener
Publishes the court-approved documents No case number, no court named
Deadline matches the court order Urgent deadline found only in the email

If you already handed over information

If you entered card details, ask your issuer to reissue the card rather than only disputing a charge. If you entered a Social Security number, place a free fraud alert with any one of the three credit bureaus, which obliges the other two to match it. Report the notice itself to the FTC so the domain gets flagged for everyone else.

If you sold the vehicle

Former owners are frequently still covered for reimbursement of costs incurred while they owned it, even though the remedy itself follows the car. The class definition will state whether former owners are included and for which claim types.
