How to Connect a Bluetooth Speaker to a TV

September 9, 2026

If the TV has Bluetooth, pair it from the sound settings menu. If it does not, a transmitter on the optical output solves it, and lip sync is the problem you will actually spend time on.

If the TV has Bluetooth built in

  1. Put the speaker into pairing mode, which usually means holding the Bluetooth button until it flashes rapidly.
  2. On the TV, open Settings, then Sound, then look for Sound Output or Audio Output.
  3. Choose the Bluetooth or wireless speaker list option and let it scan.
  4. Select the speaker when it appears and confirm.

Menu naming varies by manufacturer, but the option is nearly always inside the sound settings rather than a general Bluetooth menu, because many TVs treat Bluetooth audio separately from Bluetooth remotes and keyboards.

If the TV has no Bluetooth

A Bluetooth transmitter takes audio from the TV and broadcasts it. Which output you use matters.

Output Quality Notes
Optical Best Digital, unaffected by TV volume control on many sets
3.5mm headphone Good Simple, and TV volume usually still works
RCA Good Common on older sets
HDMI ARC Best Only if the transmitter supports it, which is uncommon

Buy a transmitter that supports aptX Low Latency and pair it with a speaker that also supports it. Low latency only works when both ends do, which is the detail most buyers miss.

Fixing lip sync

Bluetooth encoding, transmission and decoding introduce delay. Standard codecs can run to a couple of hundred milliseconds, which is clearly visible on speech. Three things reduce it.

  • Use a low latency codec on both devices. The single biggest improvement available.
  • Use the TV’s audio delay setting. Many sets offer a lip sync adjustment that shifts the video to match.
  • Reduce interference. Congested 2.4GHz spectrum increases retransmission and therefore delay.

When Bluetooth is the wrong answer

For a permanent living room setup, a wired connection or HDMI ARC to a soundbar will always beat Bluetooth on quality and latency. Bluetooth is the right tool for a temporary arrangement, a portable speaker, or a room where running a cable is impractical. Choosing it for a fixed installation means living with compression and delay for no reason.
