How to Install Memory in a Laptop: RAM Upgrade Guide

Check first whether the RAM is even socketed. Many modern thin laptops solder it to the board, and no amount of disassembly changes that.

Before you buy anything

  1. Confirm the RAM is replaceable. Manufacturer specifications state whether memory is socketed or soldered. Memory vendor configurators are reliable for this.
  2. Identify the type. DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable and the notch positions physically prevent installing the wrong one.
  3. Check the maximum supported. Both the chipset and the manufacturer impose limits, and exceeding them means the machine will not boot.
  4. Count the slots. Two slots means you can add a stick. One occupied slot means you must replace rather than add.

Installing it

  1. Shut down fully, unplug, and remove the battery if it is removable.
  2. Hold the power button for fifteen seconds to discharge residual current.
  3. Ground yourself by touching an unpainted metal surface. Static damage is silent and permanent.
  4. Open the access panel. Some laptops have a small dedicated hatch, others require the whole base to come off.
  5. To remove an existing module, push the retaining clips outward. The module springs up to about thirty degrees.
  6. To install, align the notch with the slot key, insert at the same thirty degree angle, then press down until both clips click.

The angle matters. Modules seat at an angle and are then pressed flat. Trying to push one straight down into the slot will not work and can damage the contacts.

Confirming it worked

Boot and check the reported memory in system information. If the machine does not boot at all, or beeps in a pattern, the module is almost certainly not fully seated. Reseating it fixes this the large majority of the time. If the reported total is lower than expected by a few hundred megabytes, that is integrated graphics claiming its share and is normal.

Dual channel is worth the effort

Two matched modules running in dual channel deliver noticeably better performance than one larger module, particularly on machines using integrated graphics, which share system memory and are bandwidth limited. Two eight gigabyte sticks generally outperform one sixteen gigabyte stick in exactly the workloads where a laptop feels slow.
