Why Is My Data Not Working? Narrow It Down Fast

The first question is whether one app is failing or all of them. A single broken app is an app problem and no amount of network fiddling will help it. Everything failing at once points at the connection, the account, or a setting you or an update changed. Test both before touching anything.

Run the scope test before you touch a setting

Turn wi-fi off so the phone is forced onto cellular. Now open a browser and load a plain website you do not normally visit. Then open two unrelated apps. You are sorting the problem into one of three buckets: one app is broken, everything is broken, or the browser works while apps do not.

The third result is the interesting one. If web pages load but apps sit and spin, the cellular link is alive and something is filtering the traffic, usually a vpn that stayed on, a privacy relay feature, or a data saver mode that has been restricting background apps quietly since the last update.

Work down this list and stop when it loads

  1. Check the mobile data toggle. It gets switched off by accident, and by battery savers that turn it off during low power mode.
  2. Toggle airplane mode on, wait, then off. Forces a fresh registration with the tower.
  3. Restart the phone. Boring, effective, and it clears a stuck radio state nothing else reaches.
  4. Turn off any vpn or private relay. A vpn whose subscription lapsed will silently block traffic instead of passing it through.
  5. Look at your allowance and your bill. Carriers throttle to unusable speeds after a plan limit, and a missed payment cuts data while leaving calls alive. Check the usage screen in your carrier app for your own numbers.
  6. Move. Walk outside, step away from the building, try a different part of town. Indoor dead zones are real and no setting fixes them.
  7. Reset network settings. Last resort, because it wipes wi-fi passwords and bluetooth pairings too.

Match what you are seeing to where the fault is

Symptom Where the problem lives
One app fails, everything else fine That app, or its login session. Reinstall it.
All apps fail, browser works Vpn, private relay, or data saver restrictions
Nothing works and bars are empty Coverage, sim seating, or the radio itself
Full bars, nothing loads Account status, data allowance, or network congestion
Started right after a software update Carrier settings profile needs refreshing
Works on wi-fi only, never on cellular Mobile data disabled for that app or globally
Everyone in the house has it at once Local outage. Nothing on your phone to fix.

The settings worth touching last

Access point names, sometimes labeled apn, tell your phone how to reach the carrier’s data network. They are configured automatically and almost never break on their own, which is why editing them is a late step rather than an early one. If you do need them, get the exact values from your carrier’s support page rather than a forum post, because a wrong entry takes data down completely.

The same caution applies to network mode. Forcing the phone onto a single generation of network can help in a specific weak spot and can also cut you off entirely somewhere else. If you change it to test something, change it back.

When it is not your phone at all

Contact your carrier if calls and texts work while data stays dead across restarts, if data stopped on the day a bill was due, if a newly activated sim or esim has never carried data, or if neighbors on the same network are having the same trouble. Those are account and network conditions, and no amount of resetting from your side will move them.
