An iPhone flashlight usually stops working because the Camera app has control of the LED, the battery is critically low, the phone has overheated, or the button was removed from Control Center. Close the camera, let the phone cool down, charge it past the low power cutoff, then try the button again.
Why the flashlight button turns gray
The flashlight and the camera flash are the same tiny LED. Only one thing can own it at a time, so iOS hands it to whichever app asked first. If the Camera app is open in the background, or a video call is live, or a QR scanner inside a banking app is still running, the flashlight button goes gray and nothing happens when you press it.
Heat is the second common cause. When the internal temperature climbs, iOS shuts down the parts that generate the most heat, and a constantly lit LED is near the top of that list. You will often see a temperature warning first, but not always.
Fixes to try in order
- Swipe up from the bottom of the screen, or up from the app switcher, and close the Camera app plus any app that scans codes.
- Open Camera, tap the flash icon, and turn the flash on for one photo. That often unsticks a frozen LED. Then close Camera and try the flashlight.
- Check the battery percentage. If it is in single digits, charge for five minutes and test again.
- Take the phone out of a hot car or off a sunny table and give it ten minutes in the shade.
- Restart the phone. A plain restart clears most stuck LED states.
- Go to Settings, Control Center, and confirm Flashlight is in the included list. If it sits under More Controls, tap the plus to add it back.
When the button is simply gone
A missing button is a layout problem, not a fault. Control Center is editable, and it is easy to drag the flashlight out by accident. The Lock Screen corner shortcut is separate again, and on newer iOS releases it can be swapped for a different control, which surprises people who expect it to always be the flashlight.

How to tell if the LED itself has failed
Run one simple test. Open the Camera app, force the flash on, and take a photo in a dark room. If the flash does not fire either, the problem is the LED module or the board that drives it, not a software setting. Water exposure and drops are the usual reasons that module dies.
At that point no amount of restarting helps. Back up the phone, then book a service appointment through the Apple Support app or a provider you trust. If the phone is still covered, the repair is often cheap or free, so check the coverage status in Settings, General, About before you pay anything.
