Apple Maps has no voice picker of its own. The navigation voice is the Siri voice set for the whole iPhone, so you change it in the Siri settings rather than in Maps. Inside Maps itself you can only change how loud the guidance is, or switch it off.
Change the voice itself
- Open Settings and look for the Siri entry. Depending on your software version it may be called Siri, or Siri and Search, and on some versions the voice controls sit under the Accessibility section instead.
- If you cannot find it, use the search box at the top of Settings and type voice. That works regardless of which version reshuffled the menu this year.
- Open the voice options and choose a variety, which is the accent, and then a specific voice.
- Tap a voice to hear a sample. The phone downloads it in the background before it takes effect.
- Start a navigation route to confirm. The change applies to Siri everywhere, not only to Maps.
Which accents and voices you see depends on the language the phone is set to. Some languages offer several, and some offer one.
Change the volume or mute the guidance
- Open Settings and find the Maps entry in the list of apps.
- Open the driving or navigation section inside it. The wording varies by version.
- Look for navigation voice volume. The choices are typically no voice, low, normal, and loud.
- During an active route you can also mute guidance from the audio control on the navigation screen, which is the faster option mid drive.

Changing the system language to hear directions in another language changes every menu on the phone as well, which is why most people leave it alone and only change the Siri voice.
Why your choice may not stick
- The voice is still downloading. A new voice needs a connection and a few minutes before it replaces the old one.
- A focus mode is silencing it. Driving focus and similar modes can cut spoken audio without any obvious sign.
- Audio is routing elsewhere. If the phone is paired to a car or a speaker that is switched off, guidance plays there and not through the phone.
- The volume was set during navigation. Guidance volume is adjusted while it is speaking, so pressing the volume keys at any other moment changes a different output instead.
- The phone needs a restart. Voice changes occasionally need one before they take hold, which is worth trying before anything more involved.
