Summer has two official endings. Meteorological summer always ends on August 31, while astronomical summer ends at the September equinox, which falls on September 22 or 23 in most years in the United States. Both are correct, they just answer slightly different questions.
The two definitions, side by side

Meteorological seasons exist because climate records need tidy blocks. Whole calendar months compare neatly from one year to the next, so weather agencies treat June, July, and August as summer everywhere in the northern hemisphere. That definition never moves.
Astronomical seasons follow the Earth’s tilt. Summer runs from the June solstice to the September equinox, the moment when the Sun crosses the celestial equator heading south. Because the orbit does not line up with a 365 day calendar, that moment drifts by several hours each year and gets reset by leap years.

How to find this year’s equinox
- Check the US Naval Observatory or the National Weather Service, both of which publish the exact date and time.
- Note that the moment is published in Universal Time on many sites. Convert it to your own zone before you quote a date, because the conversion can shift it by a day.
- If you only need the season label for a caption or a school project, September 22 or 23 is the safe answer for the United States.
Avoid any page that states a single equinox date for every year. That is the clearest sign nobody checked.
The version most people actually use
Culturally, summer in the United States ends at Labor Day. Pools close, the school year is underway, and the calendar simply feels different, even though the days are still long and the afternoons are often still hot. This is why arguments about the last day of summer never resolve. People are using three different systems and all three are legitimate.
What changes after the equinox
After the September equinox the northern hemisphere tips away from the Sun, so nights grow longer than days and keep stretching until the December solstice. Sunsets arrive earlier each evening, and the shift feels sudden in early November when the clocks fall back and the afternoon light disappears an hour sooner.
Temperature lags behind all of this. Oceans and land hold summer heat for weeks, which is why September often outperforms June for beach weather in much of the country. The calendar can call the season over while the thermometer clearly disagrees.
