Last year’s midrange flagship, bought new at a discount, is frequently better value than this year’s budget model at the same price. It usually has a better screen, a better main camera and a longer remaining update window.

A return window is short, so front load the checks that are expensive to discover later. Make calls from the places where your old phone struggled, since band support and antenna design vary more at this price than anything on the box.
