With the engine off and eye protection on, disconnect the negative cable first, then the positive, and scrub the posts and clamps with a paste of baking soda and water. Rinse lightly, dry everything completely, and reconnect positive first with negative last.
Three safety rules that are not optional
A lead acid battery holds sulfuric acid and vents hydrogen, especially just after a drive or a charge. Hydrogen ignites from a small spark, so no cigarettes and no tools laid across the top of the battery. Work outdoors or with the door open.
Wear splash rated eye protection and gloves, since electrolyte and dried corrosion dust both burn skin and eyes. And take the negative cable off first every time. With the negative already off, a wrench that slips from the positive post onto bodywork completes no circuit. In the other order, that slip dumps the full current of the battery through your tool.
One more check. A cracked, swollen or leaking battery is not a cleaning job. Take it to a recycler.
The white crust is a sulfate, so an alkali dissolves it
Corrosion builds because acid vapor and hydrogen escape around the post seal and react with the metal. On lead posts that gives pale gray or white lead sulfate. On copper clamps it shows as blue or green copper salts. Both are acidic, which is why baking soda is the standard answer. It is an alkali, so it neutralizes the acid on contact, and the fizzing is the reaction running.
The deposits matter because they conduct badly. Crust between clamp and post adds resistance, and the symptoms mimic a dying battery: slow cranking, dim lights, an intermittent no start. Cleaning the connection is free and rules that out first.
At the battery, in order
- Engine off, keys out. Let it sit a few minutes if the car has just been running.
- Loosen and remove the negative cable, marked with a minus sign and usually black, and tuck it where it cannot spring back.
- Remove the positive cable the same way and keep it clear of any metal.
- Mix a tablespoon or so of baking soda into a small amount of water until it is a thin paste. Brush it onto the posts, the clamps and any crust on the tray.
- Let it fizz for a minute, then scrub with a battery terminal brush or a stiff nylon one. Keep the paste out of the vent caps on a serviceable battery, since it neutralizes the electrolyte inside.
- Wipe the residue with a damp cloth, using as little water as possible, then dry every surface with a rag.
- Reconnect the positive cable first and tighten it, then the negative last. Snug is enough. Overtightening cracks the post seal and starts the whole problem again.
What helps versus what makes it worse

Stopping it from coming straight back
Once the connection is tight and dry, coat the outside of the posts and clamps with dielectric grease, petroleum jelly or a terminal spray. Felt protectant washers sit under the clamp and cover the base of the post where crust usually starts.
If corrosion returns quickly on the same post, treat it as a symptom. A loose clamp, a failed post seal, or a charging system pushing too much voltage will all keep venting acid no matter how well you clean. Heavy buildup on the negative side often points to undercharging and crust on the positive to overcharging, so have the charging system tested.
