Kill the power, then slide an old pillowcase over each blade, press gently and pull it back toward you so the dust falls inside the fabric instead of onto the room. Finish with a barely damp cloth on the blade tops and a dry cloth on the motor housing.
Power off first, and the wall switch is not always enough
A ceiling fan blade at rest is harmless. A blade that starts turning while your arm is extended from a ladder is not. Switch the fan off, wait for the blades to stop completely, and pull the breaker if the fan runs on a remote or a smart control, because those receivers can be triggered by a handset in another room.
Use a stepladder rather than a chair, and position it so you reach the blade in front of you instead of stretching sideways. Most ceiling fan injuries come from the ladder, not the fan.

Fan dust is held on by static, which is why it clings
Blades push air all day, and that constant friction between moving air, airborne particles and a dry surface builds a static charge. The charge pulls fine dust in and holds it flat against the blade, which is why a feather duster mostly rearranges it and why the gray furring along the leading edge never blows off on its own.
In kitchens, that film is not dry dust either. Cooking aerosols land on the blade and turn the dust into a sticky coating that needs a damp cloth and a moment of dwell time. Bedrooms and living rooms usually stay dry and lift clean with fabric alone.
The pillowcase method
- Spread an old sheet or a few newspapers on the floor under the fan. Something always escapes.
- Slip a pillowcase over one blade until the closed end meets the tip.
- Press the fabric lightly against the top and bottom faces, then draw it back along the blade in one slow pull. The dust ends up inside.
- Repeat on each blade, then shake the pillowcase out outdoors or straight into the washing machine.
- Go around again with a cloth wrung out in warm water and a drop of dish soap for any greasy film, and dry each blade immediately.
- Wipe the motor housing and the light fitting with a dry cloth, and vacuum the vents around the motor with a brush tool rather than pushing dust into them.

The wobble that shows up after cleaning
Some fans run smoothly when filthy and start ticking once they are clean. Uneven dust loading can mask a balance problem, and taking the weight off exposes it. Before blaming yourself, check that every blade screw at the motor hub is snug, since vibration loosens them over the years.
If it still wobbles, measure from the ceiling to the tip of each blade in turn and look for a blade sitting lower than the others. Most fans ship with a small balancing kit of clip weights and adhesive weights for exactly this, and replacements are sold cheaply. A persistent wobble is a mounting or blade problem worth fixing rather than living with, because the movement keeps working the bracket loose.
