Start with a fuel tank detergent built on polyether amine, move to an on car rail service if the symptoms stay, and send the injectors out for ultrasonic cleaning and flow testing when you want proof rather than hope. Each step reaches deposits the cheaper one cannot.
The blockage is baked varnish, not loose dirt
An injector nozzle sits in or beside a combustion chamber, so it keeps absorbing heat after you switch the engine off. The fuel still in the tip cooks. Heavier fuel molecules break down and polymerize into a hard lacquer that narrows the metering holes and spoils the spray cone. The engine does not lose a lot of fuel volume, it loses atomisation, and a coarse stream burns worse than a fine mist.
That is why nothing in the cleaning cabinet applies here. The deposit is a heat formed polymer bonded to steel, and dislodging it means either a detergent that survives combustion chamber temperatures or physical agitation on a bench.

Direct injection changes which problem you are solving
On a port injected engine the injector sprays onto the back of the intake valve, so detergent in the fuel washes both the tip and the valve on every cycle. Additives really do keep those systems clean.
A direct injection engine sprays straight into the cylinder, and no fuel ever touches the intake valve. Carbon from crankcase vapor and exhaust gas recirculation builds up on those valves and nothing you pour into the tank will reach it. If a modern turbocharged engine is stumbling, injector cleaner may help the nozzles while the valve deposits carry on regardless, and clearing those takes walnut blasting or chemical soaking with the intake off. Knowing which engine you have prevents a lot of wasted money.
Three levels of cleaning
- Tank additive. Look for polyether amine, usually printed as PEA, on the ingredient list rather than for marketing claims on the front. It works gradually over a tank or two and is the only method that treats every injector evenly with no tools.
- On car rail service. A shop disables the fuel pump and feeds pressurised solvent to the rail so the engine runs on cleaner. Stronger than an additive, still no way to verify the result on any individual injector.
- Bench service. The injectors come out and go into an ultrasonic bath, then onto a flow bench that measures delivery and shows the spray pattern before and after. This is the only route that tells you whether a specific injector was ever the problem, and it is when worn filter baskets, O rings and pintle caps get replaced.
Helpful versus harmful

Before you open anything, respect the pressure
A fuel rail holds pressure long after the engine stops, and direct injection systems run at a level far above older port systems. Follow the pressure relief procedure in the service information for your specific vehicle, work on a cold engine, keep a fire extinguisher within reach, wear eye protection, and disconnect the battery negative before removing electrical connectors.
It is also worth ruling out the cheap causes first. A misfire blamed on injectors is often an ignition coil, a spark plug at the end of its life, or a fuel filter nobody has changed. Pull the trouble codes and see whether the fault follows one cylinder. If swapping a coil moves the misfire to a different cylinder, your injectors were never the issue.
