No. Sinners is an original screenplay by Ryan Coogler, not a dramatization of anything that happened. The twin brothers, the juke joint they open and the vampires who lay siege to it were written for the film. What is real is the world those characters move through, because 1932 Mississippi, the Delta blues and the Chinese owned grocery stores of Clarksdale are all matters of record.

The uncle whose blues records started it
Coogler has described the film as a tribute to his uncle James, whom he called the oldest male member of his family from Mississippi. Speaking to NBC News, he said the man meant a lot to him, that he died right after Coogler finished post production on Creed, and that all he would do was play blues records. Coogler went into the music afterwards trying to work out why: “I was trying to understand why my uncle loved it so much. When I got into it, in terms of researching it, it just blew my mind.” He has since called the blues probably the greatest contribution the country has made to global culture.
That is an origin, not a source. No character in Sinners is a portrait of James Edmonson, and no event in the plot is lifted from his life. The relative explains why the film exists and why it sounds the way it does. He does not make the story a reported one.
Clarksdale in 1932 is documented ground
The setting is not a vague South. Clarksdale sits in the Mississippi Delta, and the year the film picks lands in the middle of the sharecropping era under Jim Crow segregation. During preparation Coogler took composer Ludwig Goransson to the Dockery Plantation in the Delta, one of the places most closely tied to the early blues, and has described standing there watching a seventy year old Swedish man get emotional about it.
Real musicians sit in the film’s frame of reference too. Charley Patton is named in connection with a guitar that appears in the story, and Coogler has cited Robert Johnson and Tommy Johnson recordings from his pre production listening. None of that is dramatized biography. It is period furniture, assembled carefully. The film itself was shot in Louisiana rather than Mississippi, with principal photography in New Orleans running from mid April to mid July 2024, on 65mm using a mix of IMAX and Ultra Panavision cameras.
The Chinese grocery is the most checkable detail
The Chow family, who run a grocery serving Black customers in Clarksdale, surprise a lot of viewers, and they are the element with the deepest paper trail. Chinese families settled across the Mississippi Delta from the late nineteenth century, many of them moving out of field labor into retail, and historians have documented several hundred Chinese owned groceries in Delta towns including Clarksdale, Greenville and Greenwood. Under segregation, families frequently ran separate stores for Black and white customers, which is precisely the arrangement the film puts on screen.
Coogler did not guess at this. After watching a 2017 AJ+ documentary about Southern Chinese Americans made by Dolly Li, he brought her in as a consultant, and her research fed into casting calls and production detail. Coogler has also said his father in law has Mississippi Delta Chinese ancestry, which is how he came to the subject in the first place.
Vampires are where the record stops
Everything above is setting. The story is not. Smoke and Stack Moore, their cousin Sammie, the opening night of the juke joint and the visitor who asks to be invited in are invented, and no court record, newspaper account or folk case sits underneath them. The closest real touchstone is the crossroads legend long attached to Delta blues musicians, and that is folklore rather than documented event.
The industry classified the script for what it is. At the 98th Academy Awards in March 2026, Sinners won Best Original Screenplay for Coogler, along with Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan, Best Cinematography and Best Original Score, out of a record sixteen nominations. Original is the operative word in that first category.
A three step check for a period horror film
- Read the writing credit before anything else. Written by, with no source line beneath it, means an original screenplay. A based on credit is a selling point, so studios never bury it.
- Separate the year from the plot. A production can research a period exhaustively and still invent every person in it. Accurate production design is not evidence of a true story.
- Look for the consultant. When a filmmaker hires a historian or a documentarian, press coverage names them, and that tells you which parts were checked against a record.
