A car overheats when coolant is low, not circulating, or not being cooled by airflow. A leak, a stuck thermostat, a failed water pump, or a radiator fan that stopped spinning covers most cases. Pull over and shut the engine off first, because heat damage compounds fast every minute you keep driving.
Stop driving before you try to diagnose anything
An overheating engine is the one dashboard warning that gets dramatically worse while you think about it. Signal, get off the road, put the car in park, and shut the engine down. Then leave the hood closed. A cooling system under pressure can spray boiling coolant the moment you release the cap or disturb a hose, and burns from that are the most common injury in an overheating incident.
If the gauge is climbing but has not pegged yet and you are somewhere you cannot safely stop, two moves buy you a minute. Turn the heater to maximum heat and the blower to high, which dumps engine heat into the cabin and genuinely lowers coolant temperature. Turn the air conditioning off, since the AC condenser sits in front of the radiator and adds heat exactly where you do not want it. Neither of these is a repair. They are a way to reach a shoulder.

Ranked by how often it actually turns out to be the cause
- Low coolant from a leak. Radiator seams, hose ends, the water pump weep hole, and the heater core are the usual spots. A puddle under the car or a sweet smell after driving points here.
- Radiator fan not running. Shows up in traffic, disappears at speed. Blown fuse, failed relay, dead fan motor, or a worn fan clutch on older trucks.
- Stuck thermostat. A thermostat that fails closed blocks flow to the radiator entirely. Classic symptom is a fast temperature climb shortly after a cold start.
- Failed water pump. No pump, no circulation. Often preceded by a whine, a wobble in the pulley, or a drip from the weep hole.
- Blocked radiator or air in the system. Bugs and road debris packed into the fins, or an air pocket left behind after a coolant service.
- Head gasket failure. Last on the list because it is usually a consequence of the items above rather than the starting point.
Read the gauge pattern, not just the number
When the temperature rises tells you more than how high it goes. Match your pattern to the column on the right before you spend money on parts.

The point where you call a tow instead of a mechanic
Call for a tow if the gauge reached the red zone, if steam came out from under the hood, if the engine ran rough or lost power while hot, or if the coolant tank is empty and you have no idea where the coolant went. Those four conditions all suggest damage may already be underway, and driving to the shop is how a repairable problem becomes an engine replacement.
A shop pressure tests the system, which finds leaks that never drip while the car sits, and runs a combustion gas test on the coolant to check whether exhaust is getting into it. Both take minutes and neither is something you can do in a parking lot. If the car cooled down, refilled cleanly, and has run normally since, you still want the leak found. Coolant does not evaporate out of a sealed system.
