Use an ear cleaner your vet recommends, fill the canal, massage the base of the ear for several seconds, let the dog shake, then wipe only the part you can see with cotton wool or gauze. Nothing goes deeper than your fingertip reaches, and no cotton swabs at any point.
A dog’s ear canal turns a corner
Human ear canals run in more or less a straight line toward the eardrum. A dog’s does not. It drops down vertically from the opening, then makes a sharp turn and runs horizontally toward the eardrum, so the shape is closer to an L than a tube. Everything about cleaning follows from that bend.
It explains why a cotton swab is such a bad idea. The swab cannot follow the corner, so instead of lifting material out it compacts wax and debris down at the elbow and packs it against the eardrum, which is the exact spot you were hoping to clear. It also explains why liquid has to be massaged rather than poured and left. Gravity alone will not bring anything back up around that turn.
Wax itself is normal and useful. Healthy ears produce it, trap dust in it, and migrate it slowly outward on their own. A dog with clean, odorless ears usually needs nothing more than a look every week or two.
Set everything out before you open the bottle
Ear cleaning goes badly when the dog gets a wet ear and the human is still hunting for a towel. Lay out cotton wool balls or gauze squares, a towel for the inevitable shake, the cleaner your vet suggested, and a handful of treats. Do it in a bathroom or outdoors, because the shake sprays cleaner surprisingly far.
Work with the dog sitting or lying with the ear facing up, and keep your tone bored rather than excited. If your dog flinches hard when you touch the base of the ear, stop there. Pain on handling is a reason to book a vet appointment, not a reason to push through with a bottle.
The routine for a healthy ear
- Lift the ear flap so the canal opening is exposed and you can see straight in.
- Fill the canal with cleaner until it is genuinely full. Keep the bottle tip near the opening rather than inserting it, so it stays uncontaminated.
- Massage the base of the ear for several seconds. You should hear a squelching sound, which means the liquid has gone around the bend and is doing its job.
- Stand back and let the dog shake. This is what brings loosened debris up to the opening.
- Wipe the visible part only, the flap and the entrance, with cotton wool wrapped over your finger. Stop where your finger stops.
- Repeat on the other side with fresh cotton wool, then reward the dog so the next session is easier.

None of that is a diagnosis, and it is not meant as one. It is a list of moments where the sensible move is handing the problem to someone who can look down the canal with a scope. Ears are small and the structures inside them are delicate, and home flushing can make an already sore ear worse.
Drop ears, swimmers and the moisture problem
Airflow is what keeps a canal dry, and a heavy hanging ear flap blocks it. Breeds with long drop ears, plus dogs with narrow canals or a lot of hair in the ear, sit in a warmer and damper environment than a dog with upright ears. Water from swimming or a bath adds to that, so drying the outer ear well after either one is a habit worth building.
Ask your vet whether plucking ear hair suits your particular dog, since opinions differ and it is not automatically helpful. And keep in mind that ears that suddenly need constant attention are usually signaling something else going on, which again is a conversation for the clinic rather than a cleaning project.
