Scrape the solid chocolate off, then flush the back of the mark with cold water only. Chocolate carries milk protein, and hot water cooks that protein into the fibers for good. Once the brown thins out, work in an enzyme detergent, let it sit, then wash cool.
Three different substances in one brown smear
Chocolate is unusual because it is not one kind of stain. A bar is roughly a quarter to a third cocoa butter, which is fat and behaves like any other grease. Milk chocolate adds milk solids, which are protein. And the color comes from cocoa polyphenols, a pigment family in the same neighborhood as tea and red wine.
Each of those three wants opposite treatment, and the protein is the bossy one. Protein denatures with heat, meaning the molecules unfold and lock onto whatever they are touching, which is the same reaction that turns a clear egg white solid in a pan. Apply hot water to fresh chocolate and you get that reaction inside the weave. The fat would happily leave with hot water and surfactant, but you do not get to use heat until the protein has already been rinsed and digested out. That single constraint sets the entire order of operations.

The sequence that clears all three layers
- Lift off every solid crumb with a dull knife or a spoon edge. Chilling the garment briefly makes this cleaner if the chocolate is soft.
- Turn the item inside out and hold the back of the stain under cold running water. Keep the stream moving from the clean outer edge toward the center so the ring does not widen.
- Rub a liquid enzyme detergent into the damp mark with your fingers. Enzymes are what break the milk protein into pieces small enough to rinse away.
- Let it sit. Enzyme dwell times generally run from fifteen minutes to a few hours, and what moves that number is the water temperature, how long the stain sat before treatment, and the direction on your bottle.
- Wash on cold or cool with detergent. If a greasy shadow remains, that is the cocoa butter, and now you can repeat the wash at the warmest temperature on the care label.
- Line dry and look at the fabric dry, in daylight, before deciding you are finished.

The beige ghost that appears after it dries
Wet fabric hides a lot. Water fills the gaps between fibers and darkens everything uniformly, so a faint cocoa tint disappears until the garment dries and the tint comes back as a dull beige outline. That is the pigment layer, not the fat, and it is the reason to hang the item up and revisit it rather than sending it to the dryer on optimism. Tumble heat is a one way door: it bakes the remaining polyphenols in, and the mark you could have removed on a second pass becomes the mark you live with.
For stubborn pigment, an oxygen bleach soak is the usual next step, and it is safe on far more colored fabrics than chlorine is. Even so, dab it on an inside hem or the seam allowance under an arm and let it dry before you commit the whole garment. If you do reach for chlorine bleach on white cotton, keep it away from anything containing ammonia, including most glass cleaners. The two react into chloramine gas, which irritates and can injure the lungs, and laundry rooms are small enough that people do this by accident.
