Brush the dry growth off outdoors first, then soak the garment in oxygen bleach or a strong vinegar solution before it ever reaches the machine. Mold is alive, so a plain wash only relocates spores. The musty smell fades once the colony dies and the pigment is drawn out.
You are removing a crop, not a spill
Everything else on a laundry stain list is inert material that landed on fabric. Mold grew there. Airborne spores settle on cloth constantly and do nothing until they find the three things they need: moisture, warmth and something to eat. Damp cotton supplies all three, since cellulose is food and the sweat and skin oil already in a worn shirt is an even richer meal.
A colony produces two separate outputs. One is pigment, often melanin based, which soaks into fiber and reads as gray, black or pink speckling. The other is a set of volatile compounds released as it digests, and those are what your nose registers as musty. This is why killing mold and removing mold are different tasks. Disinfect a shirt thoroughly and the spots stay. Bleach the spots on a garment still stored damp and the colony regrows within days. Both halves have to be handled, and the second one is about where the clothes live rather than what you pour on them.
Clearing the colony and then the color
- Take the item outside and brush the surface growth off while it is completely dry, sweeping from the outer edge of each patch toward its center so loose spores do not travel across clean fabric. Doing this indoors seeds the room.
- Choose your soak. Oxygen bleach dissolved in warm water suits most colored laundry. Plain white distilled vinegar suits items that cannot take bleach of any kind.
- Try it on an inside seam or the underside of a hem and let that patch dry fully. Some dyes shift under an alkaline oxygen soak, and you want to find that out on a half inch you cannot see.
- Submerge the garment completely. Soak times here commonly run from about an hour to overnight, and what changes the number is water temperature, how deeply the growth has set in, and the strength stated on the product you are using.
- Wash at the hottest temperature the care label permits, with detergent, and keep the load small so water moves freely.
- Dry the item outdoors in direct sun if you can. Sunlight both dries and bleaches, and it is the least destructive whitening available.

Mixing warning, and why it returns
Never combine chlorine bleach with vinegar. That pairing releases chlorine gas, and the same caution applies to chlorine bleach with ammonia, which produces chloramine gas instead. Both harm the lungs, and both get created by accident when someone reaches for a second bottle because the first one seemed slow. Pick one chemistry, rinse thoroughly, then stop.
The rest is housekeeping. Mold returns because the conditions returned, so the wet towel goes on a rail instead of into a hamper, the gym bag gets emptied the same day, and a finished wash comes out of the drum rather than sitting in it overnight. Before anything goes near the dryer, smell the damp fabric and look at it in daylight. Tumble heat will not kill what survived the wash, and it fixes both the remaining pigment and the sour odor into the fibers, which turns a repeatable job into a permanent one.
