How to Get Dry Erase Marker Out of Clothes: Oil and Ink

Work a drop of grease cutting dish soap into the mark before anything else touches it, because dry erase ink is built around an oily release agent. Once that oil breaks up, dab rubbing alcohol on the color that remains, blot onto a cloth underneath, then launder warm.

The ingredient that makes it wipe off a board makes it cling to cloth

A whiteboard marker is formulated to fail at sticking. Alongside the pigment and a light polymer resin, it carries a release agent, usually an oily or silicone type ingredient whose job is to sit between the pigment layer and the surface below it. On glass or melamine the ink dries as a loose crust perched on a slippery film, so a swipe of felt takes the whole thing off.

Fabric ruins that arrangement. Cloth is porous, so the oily carrier does not stay on top of anything. It wicks down into the fiber bundles and takes pigment with it, and now there is nothing left for the ink to release from. Practically, that means you are holding two stains at once: a light grease stain that water and ordinary detergent glide over, and a pigment stain trapped inside it. Removing the color first accomplishes little, since the oil that stays behind keeps its own dull mark and keeps shielding whatever dye is left.

Oil out first, pigment out second

  1. Blot up anything still wet with a dry cloth, pressing rather than wiping.
  2. Put a drop of dish soap made for cutting grease directly onto the mark, feathering it from the outer boundary toward the middle so the oily halo never grows past where it started.
  3. Work it in with a fingertip and leave it for several minutes so the surfactant can surround the oil droplets.
  4. Rinse from the reverse side with warm water, pushing the loosened oil back out the way it entered.
  5. Choose a hidden test spot for alcohol, such as an inside hem or the seam under a sleeve, and check that the fabric dye stays put after it dries.
  6. Lay the garment face down on clean rags and dab rubbing alcohol onto the back of the remaining color, changing the rag underneath every time it picks up ink.
  7. Wash with detergent at the warmest temperature the care label allows, since warmth genuinely helps the grease half of this stain.

Two habits that quietly finish the garment off

The first is scrubbing. Whiteboard habits transfer badly, and abrasion on cloth spreads pigment sideways while raising a fuzzy patch of broken surface fibers that is visible long after the ink is gone. Pressure straight down onto an absorbent layer moves ink out. Friction moves it around.

The second is trusting the machine to finish. Oil residue you cannot see becomes a yellowish ring once a dryer has heated it, because warm fats oxidize and set into the fiber rather than rinsing away later. Hang the item, let it dry, and look at the area in strong light before you commit to tumbling it.

If you try an ammonia based spray cleaner, which a lot of marker advice suggests, keep it strictly separate from any chlorine bleach. Those two release chloramine gas when mixed, and the fumes irritate and can injure the airways within a small enclosed laundry room.
