How to Get Rust Out of Clothes: Acid, Never Bleach

Treat rust with an acid, never with bleach. Lemon juice and salt on white cotton, or a laundry rust remover for anything stubborn, converts the iron into a form that rinses away. Detergent and oxygen bleach do nothing at all here, and chlorine bleach makes the mark permanent.

Rust is a mineral, not a soil

Almost every other laundry problem is organic. Food, sweat, grass and ink are all carbon based, which is why surfactants can surround them and oxidizers can tear them apart. Rust belongs to a different category. It is iron oxide, a mineral deposit that has settled into the weave, and it does not dissolve in water at any temperature. Detergent has nothing to lift, because there is no oily soil for the surfactant tail to attach to.

Oxygen bleach fails for a related reason. Its job is to oxidize a colored compound until it stops absorbing visible light, but iron oxide is the finished product of oxidation already. Chlorine bleach is worse than useless, since piling more oxidation onto iron deepens the color and locks it into the fiber. The route that works runs in the opposite direction: an acid, ideally one that also grabs onto metal ions, turns the insoluble oxide into a soluble iron salt that simply rinses out of the cloth.

Lemon and salt, in the right order

  1. Confirm the fabric is safe. Put a drop of lemon juice on an inside seam, wait, then press a white cloth to it and look for dye on the cloth.
  2. Stretch the stained area over a bowl or lay it on a white towel so the runoff has somewhere to go.
  3. Cover the orange with a layer of table salt. Salt gives the acid something to cling to and adds gentle abrasion.
  4. Squeeze fresh lemon juice over the salt until the patch is wet through, working from the pale outer halo toward the darker center so the ring does not widen.
  5. On white cotton or linen, set the piece in direct sun for an hour and keep it damp. On colors, leave it somewhere shaded instead, because sun plus acid will fade the dye.
  6. Rinse thoroughly in cool water, then wash as usual.
  7. Air dry and look at the spot in daylight. Heat from a dryer sets what is left and shifts the orange toward brown.

Which acid suits which situation

Commercial rust removers are stronger than anything in the kitchen and deserve the label instructions read properly. Oxalic acid is not something to splash around, and it does not belong on wool, silk or anything with metallic thread.

Fix the source or you will do this again

A single orange smear usually traces to an object: a wire hanger, a rusting clothesline, a metal snap on another garment, a paperclip left in a pocket. Rust distributed across a whole load points somewhere else, most often the washer drum or iron in the water supply.

Run an empty cycle and look at the drum, the agitator bolts, and the dispenser seals. If the machine is clean, have the water checked. Both fixes are worth it, because rust removal is tedious and no fabric enjoys repeated acid treatment.

When the orange is not rust

Orange marks also come from benzoyl peroxide in acne products bleaching the dye, from certain sunscreens reacting with hard water, and from underarm residue turning yellow over time. None of those respond to acid. If lemon juice does nothing after two careful rounds, stop treating it as rust and look at what touches that part of the garment.
