Take almost none of it and pull in one motion. Nearly every failure with spider gel comes from picking up too much product or hesitating mid-stretch.
What makes it different
Spider gel is formulated to be stringy rather than fluid. Where ordinary gel polish flows and levels, spider gel holds its shape and can be drawn out into a thread far finer than a brush would produce. That thread then cures exactly where you left it.
The consequence is that it is not painted, it is stretched. Technique matters more than steadiness of hand, which is why people who cannot paint a straight line often produce clean spider gel work on their first attempt.
Why the thread holds instead of flowing
Ordinary gel polish is thinned so that it levels, which is what gives a color coat its smooth surface. Spider gel is built to do the opposite. It is loaded with pigment and thickened until it barely flows, so it holds to itself more strongly than it spreads. Lift a point of it and the whole mass follows, drawing out into a strand that thins as it travels and then stays exactly where it stops. Nothing in it wants to level, and the lamp locks that shape in.

Laying the thread before it cures
- Build your base as normal and cure it. Spider gel goes on top of a cured color layer, not onto wet polish.
- Pick up a very small amount with an orange stick, a dotting tool or the manufacturer’s tool. Less than you think.
- Touch it down at the start point and pull in one smooth continuous motion to the end point.
- Do not stop mid-line. Hesitation is what snaps the thread.
- Build the design line by line, then cure.
- Top coat with a floating brush so you never drag across the threads.
How to tell a line is right before you cure
Everything is reversible until the lamp goes on, so look first. A good thread sits slightly proud of the base and catches light along its whole length. It should be the same width end to end, with no bead parked where you started or stopped, and it should not sag or creep when you tilt the hand. A line that is already softening at its edges has spread rather than stretched, and curing it locks in a smudge. Lift it off with the tool and place it again.

What to make with it
- Web. The obvious one, and the technique is named for it. Anchor at one corner and pull spokes outward, then connect with shorter curved threads.
- Geometric lines. Straight threads crossing at angles, which is far easier than painting the same effect.
- Marble veining. Fine irregular threads over a milky base, curing between layers for depth.
- Cage effect. Threads wrapped around the whole nail in a loose lattice.
Where it is the wrong tool for the job
Stretching wants distance. On very short nails a pull covers so little ground that the strand never thins, and you get a thick stripe instead of a line. Texture defeats it too, since over glitter or an uneven surface the thread catches and lands crooked. It also needs contrast, because a dark thread on a dark base reads as nothing from arm’s length. For anything that has to be accurate, lettering or a small motif, a liner brush still wins. Spider gel is exact about thickness and vague about placement.
Temperature matters more than people expect
Spider gel behaves differently when warm. In a warm room or after being held in the hand, it loosens and starts to spread rather than stretch, which produces thick flat lines instead of threads. If the product stops behaving mid-manicure, that is usually why. Setting the pot aside for a few minutes away from a lamp restores it.
Uncured gel, your skin and the lamp
Uncured gel on skin is the part worth taking seriously. Repeated contact is how people develop a sensitivity to these products, and it tends to be permanent once it happens. Wipe gel off the cuticle and sidewalls before the lamp rather than after, since curing it against skin is the worst version of the same problem. Work somewhere with a little air movement, keep the pot closed between dips, and wash your hands at the end.
