Only wash a filter that is built to be washed, meaning the reusable mesh or foam panel in a window or portable unit. Switch the power off, slide it out, vacuum the dusty side, rinse from the clean side with lukewarm water and a little dish soap, and put it back only when it is bone dry.
Washable and disposable filters are not the same object
A window unit, a portable air conditioner and most ductless wall heads use a rigid plastic mesh or a foam pad. Those are designed to be rinsed and reused, and the maker expects you to do it. A furnace or central air system usually uses a disposable pleated panel in a cardboard frame, and that one is meant to be thrown away.
The reason is not just the cardboard. Many pleated filters rely on an electrostatic charge held by the synthetic fibers, which attracts and holds particles far smaller than the physical gaps in the media. Water strips that charge. Even if the panel dries perfectly flat, which it will not, it catches much less than it did new, while the wet pleats sag and open gaps along the folds. A washed disposable filter looks clean and performs worse than a fresh one.
Why a clogged filter can ice up the machine
An air conditioner cools by passing indoor air across a cold evaporator coil. Choke that airflow with a matted filter and less warm air reaches the coil, so the coil keeps dropping in temperature, passes freezing, and condensation on it turns to ice. Ice then blocks airflow further, and the cycle feeds itself until the unit is blowing barely cool air through a block of frost.
Most people read that as a refrigerant problem and call for service. Often the filter did it. The same restriction also makes the blower work harder for less air, which shows up on the power bill. If you find ice, shut the cooling off, run the fan alone until everything has thawed, and deal with the filter before starting over. A second habit matters too, since the pleated panels carry an airflow arrow that must point toward the blower, and a backwards filter collapses under pressure.
Washing a reusable filter properly
- Turn the unit off at the switch, and at the breaker for anything hardwired.
- Slide the filter out slowly so you do not shake the dust load back into the room.
- Vacuum the loaded face first with a brush attachment. This removes most of the debris before water turns it into mud.
- Rinse under lukewarm running water from the clean side toward the dirty side, so the flow pushes trapped dust back out the way it came in.
- Use a drop of dish soap on a greasy kitchen area filter, then rinse until the water runs clear.
- Shake off the excess and lay the filter flat to air dry. No wringing, no twisting, no hair dryer, since heat deforms the frame.
- Reinstall only when it is completely dry, and check the frame for tears or a crushed corner while it is out.

Check yours monthly during heavy use and clean or replace based on how it looks rather than a fixed interval. Pets, carpet, smoking and construction dust all shorten the cycle dramatically, and a filter that has gone gray across the whole face is already costing you cooling.
