Line a bowl with aluminum foil, add a tablespoon of baking soda per cup of very hot water, and rest the silver directly against the foil for a few minutes. The black lifts because the sulfur transfers over to the aluminum, so nothing gets sanded off the piece itself.
Silver does not get dirty, it reacts
The black on a neglected spoon is silver sulfide. Silver is chemically lazy about most things and eager about sulfur, and sulfur compounds drift around any ordinary house: gas burners, boiled eggs, onions, wool felt, rubber bands, latex paint, some cardboard boxes. The reaction proceeds on its own inside a closed drawer with nobody touching anything.
That is why soap and water accomplish nothing. There is no film sitting on top to wash away, the surface metal itself has changed identity. It also explains the real cost of polishing pastes and impregnated cloths, which work by abrasion. Every pass takes a little metal with it. On solid sterling that is survivable for decades. On plated pieces the plating is only a few microns thick, and once it is gone the base metal shows through as a dull gray patch that no product brings back.

The foil and baking soda method, step by step
- Line a heatproof bowl with aluminum foil, shiny side up, pressed flat against the sides.
- Add roughly one tablespoon of baking soda for every cup of water you plan to use, plus a pinch of salt.
- Pour in water just off the boil and stir until the powder dissolves.
- Lower the silver in so every piece touches foil somewhere. Contact is the entire mechanism, so do not stack pieces on top of each other.
- Watch it happen. Light tarnish clears in under a minute and heavy tarnish can take five. A faint sulfur smell is normal.
- Lift the pieces out with tongs, rinse under warm water, and dry right away with a soft towel. Water spots set fast on wet silver.
What works and what quietly ruins silver

Pieces that should not go in the bowl
Skip anything with intentional oxidation in the engraving, because those dark recesses are part of the design and the bath strips them off evenly. Skip hollow handled knives, where the blade is held in with resin that softens in hot water. Skip anything set with pearls, opals, turquoise or coral, since hot alkaline water is rough on porous and organic stones. Heavily worn plate is a poor candidate too, because the bath makes the thin spots more obvious rather than less.
Storage that buys you months
Tarnish is a reaction with air, so the fix is fewer sulfur sources and less air. Dry pieces completely, since moisture speeds the reaction along. Use anti tarnish cloth or a sealed bag with an anti tarnish strip inside, and keep both away from rubber, newspaper and wool. Silver in regular use tarnishes least of all, which is the least convenient advice here and also the truest.
