Air the garment outdoors before anything else, then wash it by itself and never alongside other laundry, and line dry it in the open. Fuel soaked fabric is flammable, so it stays out of a dryer entirely until no trace of the smell is left.
Why diesel outlasts nearly every other smell
Gasoline fades on its own because it is made of light, fast evaporating molecules. Diesel is the opposite end of the same barrel: a mixture of heavier hydrocarbons with much higher boiling points, which is what makes it safer to store and far more stubborn on cloth. Those heavy fractions sit on the fabric releasing odor slowly for weeks instead of flashing off in an afternoon.
Fiber choice decides how bad it gets. Polyester, nylon and acrylic are hydrocarbon polymers themselves, so oily fuel molecules have a real chemical affinity for them and work their way into the fiber rather than resting on it. Cotton and wool give it up more readily. The practical consequence is that the same splash on a poly cotton work shirt and on a plain cotton one becomes two very different problems, and the synthetic one may need several rounds before it is genuinely clean rather than temporarily masked.

The safety rules that come before any laundry
Treat these as absolute. Fuel vapor is heavier than air and it pools, and a dryer drum supplies exactly the heat, tumbling and enclosed space that turns residue into a fire.
- Remove the clothing outside and leave it outside, away from any pilot light, water heater, cigarette or spark.
- Never machine dry a garment that still smells of fuel, and never put it in the same load as anything else.
- Discard clothing that is genuinely soaked through rather than trying to rescue it.
- Keep chlorine bleach out of this job. Beyond doing nothing for hydrocarbons, mixing it with ammonia based cleaners releases chloramine gas, which damages the airways in a closed laundry room.
Washing it out, one round at a time
- Hang the garment outdoors in moving air for at least a full day. This alone carries off the lighter, sharpest smelling fractions and lowers the fire risk before anything enters the house.
- If there is a visible splash, dab a grease cutting dish soap onto it, working from the edge of the mark inward so the oily ring stays where it is.
- Test any stronger degreaser on an inside hem first and let it dry, since work fabrics are often dyed deeply and some degreasers pull color unevenly.
- Soak the item in a tub of warm water with baking soda or white vinegar. These soaks commonly run from an hour to overnight, and the useful length depends on how strong the odor still is, the fiber type, and the direction on whatever product you use.
- Wash it alone on the hottest setting the care label permits, with detergent, and add a second rinse.
- Line dry outdoors, ideally in sun and wind, and smell it once it is completely dry.
- Repeat the cycle if any odor survives, then run the empty machine hot to clear the drum.

One last point about heat. Even setting the fire risk aside, a warm tumble bakes any remaining oily residue into the fiber the same way it fixes a stain you failed to remove, and once that happens the smell becomes part of the garment. Judge the result with your nose on dry fabric in fresh air, and give it another round if there is any doubt.
