Static is dry synthetic fabric holding an electric charge with nowhere to release it, so the quickest fix is adding moisture or a conductor. Run a metal hanger between the garment and your body, mist it lightly with water, or stop drying loads once they stop being damp.
Where the charge actually comes from
Rubbing two different materials together transfers electrons from one to the other. That is the triboelectric effect, and a tumbling dryer is an efficient machine for producing it: every garment rubs every other garment thousands of times per cycle. Materials sit on a rough scale of how strongly they grab or shed electrons, and polyester, nylon and acrylic sit far from cotton and wool on that scale, which is why a mixed load crackles more than a load of nothing but t shirts.
The charge itself is not the problem. The inability to get rid of it is. Natural fibers keep a thin film of water on and in them, and water conducts, so charge drains away as fast as it builds. Synthetics are excellent insulators, and once the last trace of humidity is gone, each garment becomes an isolated store of electrons with no path to ground. Everything on the list below does one of two things: it puts moisture back, or it hands the charge a route out.
Fixes for a garment you are wearing right now
- Slide a wire hanger or any metal object between the fabric and your skin. The metal conducts the imbalance away and the cling drops immediately.
- Dampen your palms and smooth them over the outside of the garment. A trace of water is enough to make the surface conductive.
- Put lotion on the skin underneath. Much of the clinging happens because dry legs and arms are as charged as the clothing is.
- Mist very lightly with water from a spray bottle, sweeping from the hem upward in passes rather than soaking a single patch.
- If you use an anti static spray, try it on the inside of a hem first and let it dry. Some formulas leave a visible film on dark fabric.
- For a long term fix, raise the humidity in the rooms where clothes are stored and worn.

Stopping it at the dryer
The dryer is where static gets manufactured, and the last stretch of a cycle does most of the damage. Up to the point where clothes stop being damp, evaporating water is carrying charge away as fast as tumbling creates it. Every minute after that is pure accumulation, which is why laundry that felt fine coming out of the washer arrives snapping and clinging.
Shortening the cycle fixes more than static. Dryer heat is the one step in laundry that cannot be taken back, so anything still carrying a mark you have not dealt with gets that mark fixed permanently at the same time. Take the load out a few minutes early, shake it apart, hang the synthetics, and let the room finish the job. Line drying almost never produces static at all, because there is no tumbling and the fabric dries in humid outdoor air rather than in a hot sealed drum.
