How to Get Nail Polish Out of Clothes Without a Hole

Check the fiber content on the care label before opening any remover, because acetone dissolves acetate, triacetate and modacrylic on contact. If the fabric is safe, blot acetone through the reverse of the stain onto clean cloth, changing that cloth constantly, then launder.

Polish is a plastic film, not a liquid stain

What comes out of the bottle is a lacquer: a film forming resin, often nitrocellulose, dissolved in a fast evaporating solvent with pigment and mica along for the ride. The solvent leaves within a minute or two and the resin left behind knits into a continuous plastic skin. On a nail that is the whole point. On cloth the skin forms around individual fibers and threads instead of over a smooth surface, so it locks itself in mechanically as well as chemically.

Nothing in a laundry cupboard touches that. Detergent works by surrounding oily soil, and cured lacquer is not oily soil. The only route back is to reverse the process that created it by reintroducing a solvent the resin will dissolve into, which in practice means acetone or the ethyl acetate in a non acetone remover. That is where the danger starts, because acetone is indifferent to what else it dissolves along the way.

Which fabrics acetone will eat

Acetate and triacetate are themselves cellulose based plastics, chemically close relatives of the resin in the polish, so acetone treats them as the same material and softens them into goo. A hole appears in seconds and cannot be repaired.

Lifting the lacquer without spreading it

  1. Blot standing polish with a paper towel, pressing straight down so the pool stops expanding.
  2. Once it sets, flex the fabric and lift off loose flakes of film with a fingernail or a dull blade.
  3. Dab remover on a hidden spot, ideally a seam allowance inside the hem, and watch for two failures: color coming away, and the fabric itself turning soft, tacky or thin. Let it dry before deciding.
  4. Lay the garment stain side down on a folded white cloth, so dissolved lacquer has somewhere to land.
  5. Touch remover to the back of the mark with a cotton ball, starting at the outer rim and closing inward, since liquefied lacquer travels wherever the solvent goes.
  6. Move to a clean section of cloth after every dab. Reusing a colored patch prints the polish straight back.
  7. Rinse the area, then wash with detergent at the temperature the label allows and air dry it.

Acetone vapor is heavier than air and highly flammable, so ventilation matters as much as fabric choice. Keep it away from chlorine bleach as well, since that combination can generate chloroform and other chlorinated byproducts, and keep chlorine bleach away from ammonia cleaners, which produces chloramine gas. Finally, remember that dryer heat resets whatever film you missed into a hard stiff plate that no longer responds to solvent, so the inspection while the garment hangs dry is the step that decides whether a second attempt is even possible.
