Cover a fresh spot in cornstarch or baking soda and leave it there until the powder clumps, because dry starch pulls liquid oil out of a weave faster than any liquid will. Brush the powder away, work dish soap into the mark, then wash as warm as the care label permits.
Oil, water, and the molecule that introduces them
Olive oil is a triglyceride, a long non polar molecule with no charged regions. Water molecules are strongly polar and cling to each other, which leaves an oil droplet excluded rather than dissolved. Pour water over an oily patch of cotton and the water flows around it without ever making contact, which is exactly what people are seeing when a rinse appears to do nothing at all.
Surfactants solve that by being two things at once. Each molecule has a water loving head and an oil loving tail, so a crowd of them surrounds an oil droplet with tails inward and heads facing out, wrapping it in a shell that water will now carry away. Warmth makes the whole process faster, since heat thins the oil and raises surfactant activity. That is the reverse of the rule for blood or milk, where heat sets the stain, and it is the single most common mistake with kitchen grease: people reach for cold water out of habit and lock the oil in place.

Two stages, in the right order
- Blot the surface with a paper towel, pressing straight down. Anything you can lift now is oil that never has to be dissolved later.
- Bury the spot in cornstarch, baby powder or baking soda, enough to make a visible mound rather than a dusting.
- Leave it alone while the powder works. Half an hour is a common minimum and overnight is better, and what changes that is how much oil landed, how thick the fabric is, and how long it sat before you started.
- Scrape the caked powder off outdoors or over a bin, brushing from the outside of the patch toward its center so the oily rim stays contained.
- Put dish soap directly on the mark and rub gently with a soft toothbrush until it foams. Give it several minutes to work.
- Wash on the warmest setting the label allows, with detergent, then hang the item and look at it dry before deciding it is done.
Getting the order right, and what undoes it

The reason old olive oil stains turn yellow
Olive oil is largely unsaturated, meaning its molecules carry double bonds that oxygen can attack. Over weeks in air those bonds react, the molecules link into larger and larger chains, and the liquid oil converts into a tough tinted film bonded to the fiber. Artists rely on this behavior in drying oils on canvas. In a shirt it produces the familiar yellow brown patch that appears months after a meal, and surfactants have almost nothing left to grab.
Heat accelerates that reaction sharply, which is what makes a dryer cycle so expensive here. A grease mark also hides while wet, because fabric soaked in water is already translucent and oil shows up mainly as a translucency change, so the only honest inspection happens on dry cloth in good light. If you do move on to an oxygen bleach soak for a lingering shadow on whites, keep chlorine bleach out of the picture entirely near ammonia based cleaners, because those two release chloramine gas, which injures the airways in a confined laundry space.
