Sweep or vacuum the grit off, then mop with warm water and an alkaline or pH neutral floor cleaner, never an acidic one. Before you pick a product, drip water on the slab. If it beads, the floor is sealed and you are washing the sealer. If it darkens and soaks in, the concrete is bare and porous.
The water drop test decides your whole method
Concrete looks like one material and behaves like two. A sealed slab has a film of acrylic, epoxy or polyurethane sitting on top, or a penetrating silicate that has reacted inside the pores. An unsealed slab is open stone, and anything spilled on it travels down instead of sitting up where you can wipe it.
Drip a tablespoon of water in a few different spots and wait sixty seconds. Beading means a film sealer, so your job is to protect that film. A slow dark patch means bare or worn concrete, so your job is to get contaminants back out of the pores. Patchy results usually mean an old sealer that has worn through in the traffic lanes, which is common in garages and basements.
Why vinegar is the wrong idea on a slab
Cured concrete is strongly alkaline. The cement paste holding the aggregate together is built from calcium compounds that acid dissolves on contact. Vinegar, lemon, phosphoric descalers and anything based on muriatic acid do not lift dirt off concrete so much as remove a thin layer of the floor itself. The result is a dull, chalky patch with sand grains standing proud, and the newly opened pores stain faster than the surrounding floor.
Acid etching is a real technique, but it is surface preparation before coating, not cleaning. If a product label tells you to rinse thoroughly and neutralize afterwards, that is a preparation chemical that wandered into the cleaning aisle.
A routine that works on either kind of slab
- Dry clean first. Sweep, then vacuum the edges and any control joints, because grinding grit underfoot is what dulls both sealer and bare concrete.
- Mix an alkaline or pH neutral cleaner at the dilution on the label. Stronger is not better, since excess surfactant leaves a film that grabs dirt.
- Work in sections with a damp mop or an autoscrubber, and change the water as soon as it looks gray.
- Rinse with clean water on a sealed floor. Skipping this step is the usual reason a clean floor still looks hazy.
- For an oil spot on bare concrete, cover it with an absorbent powder or a degreasing poultice and leave it for hours, so the stain wicks upward instead of spreading.
That white bloom is salt moving through the slab
A powdery white film that keeps returning is efflorescence. Moisture traveling up through the slab carries dissolved salts to the surface, the water evaporates, and the salt is left behind. Mopping it with plenty of water dissolves the salt, carries it back in, and guarantees a repeat performance a week later.
Dry brush or vacuum it off instead, then look for the water source. A missing vapor barrier under a basement slab, a downspout dumping beside a garage, or a leaking pipe will keep feeding the deposit no matter how well you clean.

One more habit worth keeping. Wipe spills on bare concrete while they are still wet, because on a porous slab the clock is the enemy rather than the spill.
