Work out which leather you have first, then clean with a barely damp cloth and a leather specific cleaner, and condition only after the piece is dry. A jacket, a handbag, a pair of boots and a car seat can all be different materials, and a product that suits one will mark another.
Identification comes before any product
Leather is a category, not a material. Aniline leather is dyed all the way through with no pigment layer, so it shows the grain, the scars and every drop of water. Semi aniline carries a light protective coat. Pigmented leather has a full color layer and a clear topcoat, and it is the toughest of the three. Nubuck and suede have been sanded to raise a nap. Patent leather is coated in high gloss plastic. Bonded leather is shredded scrap glued onto a backing, and it is not repairable once it starts flaking.
Every piece of cleaning advice you have ever read was written for one of those and is wrong for at least one of the others.

One drop of water answers the question
Put a single drop of water on a hidden area and watch for thirty seconds. If it sinks in quickly and leaves a dark spot, the leather is unprotected aniline or a veg tanned piece, and it needs the gentlest possible treatment. If it sits as a bead, there is a finish on top and you have more room to work. If the surface goes matte and fuzzy where the drop landed, you are dealing with nubuck or suede and liquids are off the table entirely.
Run it on anything unfamiliar or secondhand. Labels rarely say, and the finish often wears off exactly where the piece gets handled.
Why ordinary soap leaves leather stiff
Tanning leaves hide sitting on the acidic side of neutral, and the fatliquors worked into the fibers during manufacture are what keep it flexible. Household soaps and detergents are alkaline, and they do two things at once. They push the leather away from its own pH, and they strip out those fats along with the dirt.
The result does not show immediately. It shows weeks later as a stiff panel that creases into hard lines and eventually cracks along them. Leather specific cleaners are formulated near the leather pH range for exactly this reason, and the conditioning step afterwards puts back some of the oils that any cleaning removes. Cleaning and feeding are two separate jobs, and doing only the first is what wears leather out.

Drying and conditioning without overdoing it
- Empty pockets, brush off loose dust and grit, and get into seams with a soft brush.
- Clean the entire panel or section rather than one spot, so the finish dries evenly with no tide line.
- Let the piece dry at room temperature and out of sunlight. A radiator or a hair dryer shrinks and hardens leather quickly.
- Once fully dry, apply a thin layer of conditioner with a cloth, wait a few minutes, and buff off anything that has not absorbed.
- Stuff bags and boots with paper while they dry so they keep their shape, and hang jackets on a broad shouldered hanger.
Frequency depends on use, not a calendar. A daily bag wants conditioning a few times a year, a jacket that mostly sits in the closet rarely at all. Over conditioning is real, since leather that cannot absorb more just stays greasy and grabs dirt.
