Match the solvent to the paint binder: warm soapy water for latex and acrylic, mineral spirits for oil and alkyd, denatured alcohol for shellac. Then work the solvent out from the metal band down at the base, because that is where paint sets hard and quietly destroys the brush.
The binder decides the solvent
Every can of paint is pigment carried in a binder, and the binder is what has to be dissolved or suspended before the brush comes clean. Latex and acrylic paints carry pigment in a water based emulsion, so while they are still wet plain water carries them away. Oil and alkyd paints use a resin that water simply beads off, which is why they need a petroleum solvent. Shellac is a resin dissolved in alcohol and returns to solution the same way.
The complication with water based paint is timing. Latex does not just dry, it cures. Water leaves, the individual polymer particles press together and link into a continuous flexible film, and that film is no longer water soluble. So a latex brush rinsed within the hour cleans up perfectly and the same brush found in the garage two days later may be beyond help.
Bristle material follows the same logic. Natural hog bristle has a hollow structure that soaks up water and swells, so it goes soft and splayed in latex. Synthetic nylon and polyester filaments do not absorb, which makes them the choice for anything water based and a poor choice for hot solvent work.
Paint in the ferrule is what ends a brush
The ferrule is the metal band clamping the bristles to the handle. Paint that creeps up into it and hardens acts like a wedge, pushing the bristles apart from the inside. The brush then dries in a splayed shape, it will no longer hold a straight line, and nothing you do later brings the point back.
Two habits prevent it. Load only the bottom third of the bristles when you dip, so paint never reaches the base in the first place. And when cleaning, push the solvent from the ferrule outward toward the tips rather than swirling the brush in a jar, because swirling drives pigment deeper into the heel. Spinning the brush or working it against your palm under running water flushes the heel properly.
The cleaning sequence, step by step
- Scrape first. Drag the loaded brush firmly across the rim of the can to return as much paint as possible before any liquid is involved.
- Wipe on newspaper until the brush stops leaving heavy color. Every gram removed here is one you do not have to wash out.
- Choose the solvent for the binder, and for oil work use two containers, a dirty jar for the first pass and a clean one for the second.
- Work the base of the bristles with your fingers or a brush comb, pushing outward from the ferrule toward the tips.
- Rinse until the runoff is clear. For water based paint, finish with a wash of warm water and dish soap, which strips the last of the residue.
- Spin or shake out the water, reshape the tip with your fingers, and hang the brush bristles down or lay it flat.

Solvent safety and drying
Solvent work needs airflow and distance from anything that sparks. Open a window or work outside, keep mineral spirits away from pilot lights and space heaters, and never mix leftover solvents together in one container, since you then have no idea what you are storing or how to dispose of it.
Rags soaked in oil based paint or oil finishes deserve particular care, because the oil generates heat as it cures and a crumpled pile of rags can reach ignition temperature on its own. Spread them flat outdoors until stiff, or hold them in a sealed metal container, and check your local waste authority for the correct drop off. Once brushes are dry, store them hanging or in their original cardboard keeper so the tip keeps its shape, and never leave a brush standing on its bristles in a jar.
