Cut power at the breaker for electric units or let a hot water unit go cold, pop off the front cover, then vacuum the fin stack with a brush attachment and follow with compressed air or a long thin brush through the fins. Straighten any bent fins before you put the cover back on.
These heaters move air, they do not beam heat
A baseboard unit is a heat source wrapped in a stack of thin metal fins, and it works by convection. Cool air enters the gap at the floor, picks up heat as it rises between the fins, and exits through the slot at the top, which pulls more cool air in behind it. The fins exist to multiply surface area so that moving column of air touches as much hot metal as possible.
Two things break that cycle. Dust settling on the fins acts as insulation, since a fuzzy layer conducts heat poorly and keeps it in the metal rather than handing it to the air. Worse, a packed fin channel blocks the airflow itself. A heater can be running at full output and heating the room badly simply because nothing is passing through it. That is why a vacuum makes a noticeable difference where wiping the cover does not.
Aluminum fins bend if you look at them wrong
The fins are aluminum sheet thin enough to fold under a fingertip, pressed onto a copper pipe or an element sheath. Bent fins are the usual souvenir of a rough cleaning, and each folded one seals off a slice of the channel permanently. Work parallel to the fins, never across them, and keep hard vacuum nozzles off the stack. A soft brush head or a bottle brush slides between them without catching.
Bent fins can be coaxed back with a fin comb from a hardware store or the tip of a butter knife, worked slowly along the bend. Straightening also matters in a second way, because aluminum and copper expand at different rates and a badly deformed fin can lose contact with the pipe, which quietly costs you output. Rust flaking off the back panel is a separate signal, one that usually points to a leak or long term condensation rather than dirt.
Working through one heater
- Shut off the circuit at the breaker for an electric unit, or set the thermostat down and let a hydronic unit cool fully. Hot fins burn and live elements are dangerous.
- Lift or unclip the front cover. Most slide up and off, some have screws at the ends.
- Vacuum the floor of the channel first so you do not push debris around.
- Brush the fins top to bottom with the vacuum running near the stack to catch what falls.
- Blow compressed air through from the back if you can reach, pointing along the fins, with the vacuum on the other side.
- Wipe the cover and the back panel with a damp cloth and dry them.
- Straighten any folded fins, check that the damper flap at the top still swings freely, then refit the cover and restore power.

Give the units a pass once a year, more often in a house with pets, since hair mats into the fin stack faster than ordinary dust. If a heater stays cold or makes knocking noises after a thorough cleaning, the issue is in the system rather than the fins, and that is a call to a heating contractor.
